Umhlanga Umhlanga is a Zulu name, meaning "Place of Reeds" as reeds were washed down to the beach from the Ohlanga River 3km north of the resort. The area was part of the coastal dune forest system where wild animals once roamed. In 1820 Umhlanga was divided into plots and it was an Irishman, Marcus McCausland, who played the leading role in the development of the village as a holiday resort. In 1923 he built the Victoria Hotel, which is now the Umhlanga Rocks Hotel. Situated in the northern part of Durban Metro, Umhlanga has developed into a prime up-market holiday resort with an array of luxury hotels, bed and breakfasts, excellent cuisine and unspoiled beaches.
